Southern Oregon's climate varies dramatically by location and season. Here's a month-by-month breakdown of what to expect across the region.
January
The depths of winter. Rogue Valley (Medford/Grants Pass): dense tule fog, temperatures 25–45°F, minimal rain but heavy fog. Umpqua Valley (Roseburg): rainy and gray, 30–50°F, occasional frost. Oregon Coast (Coos Bay): stormy and wet, 38–55°F, large surf. Klamath Falls: cold and snowy, 15–38°F.
February
Slowly improving. First daffodils appear in the Rogue Valley. Still cold and foggy but fog episodes start breaking earlier in the day. Coast remains stormy with dramatic wave action.
March
Spring's arrival. Rain continues but with more sun breaks. Temperatures climb to 40–60°F across the region. Wildflowers begin in the lower elevations of the Rogue and Umpqua valleys.
April
One of the most beautiful months in Southern Oregon. Temperatures 45–70°F, rain becomes less frequent. Outdoor recreation season opens fully. Bear Creek Greenway and the Rogue River Trail become popular.
May
Warm and increasingly dry. Highs 60–80°F in the inland valleys. Last reliable rain of the season. Mountain snow begins melting, rivers run high with snowmelt.
June
Summer begins. Inland valleys warm to 80–95°F. The dry season locks in — no significant rain until October in most years. UV index climbs. Wildfire preparedness becomes critical.
July
The hottest month. Medford and Grants Pass frequently exceed 100°F. Wildfire season peaks. Low humidity (10–25%). Klamath Falls actually pleasant at 85–92°F with low humidity. Coast stays cool at 60–68°F.
August
Similar to July. Wildfire smoke becomes a factor — check AQI daily. The Umpqua and Rogue rivers drop to low summer flows.
September
Gradual cooling begins. Still warm (80–95°F) but nights cool significantly. Fire season extends into late September in dry years. One of the best months for visiting.
October
Fall arrives. First rains of the season bring the smell of earth and relief from smoke. Temperatures 50–70°F. Fall color in the Rogue Valley is spectacular. Crater Lake Highway closes by late October.
November
Rain season fully established. Fog begins returning to the Rogue Valley on clear nights. Temperatures 35–55°F. First snow possible at higher elevations.
December
Peak fog season in Medford. Short days, minimal sunshine in the valleys. Mountains receive good snowpack. A great month for Klamath Falls (sunny and cold) versus difficult for Medford (foggy and cold).
